Multimodal Care for Soft Tissue Injuries of the Lower Limb



A literature review of multimodal care for soft tissue injuries of the lower limb was completed in Ontario, Canada and published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics in February 2016.

In this review, Sutton et al aim to identify the efficacy of utilising at least 2 distinctive therapeutic modalities for the treatment of soft tissue lower limb injury.

Studies including diagnosis of patellofemoral pain, plantar heel pain and groin pain met inclusion criteria.

Although the evidence related to multimodal treatment of patellofemoral pain was found to be inconclusive, plantar heel pain showed benefit from the most diversified care program.

Additionally, plantar heel pain responded better with multimodal programs that included manual therapy versus ultrasound.

Adductor-related groin pain was shown to response better with multiple clinicians in addition to diverse modalities.

Groin pain response findings offer an opportunity for future research to better understand.

Authors were not able to identify additional studies for other soft tissue injuries of the lower limb.

The takeaway from this study is within the conclusion that "for persistent plantar heel pain, a multimodal program of care may include mobilisation and stretching exercise” for improved outcomes.
