Improving Sports Performance with a Healthy Foot Posture

Proper foot alignment and biomechanics are the foundation of any athlete's best performance potential.

Since the level of stress placed on the feet and knees tends to be higher during sports, athletes are at a higher risk of developing chronic conditions such as Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles Tendinitis and Patellofemoral. 

Runners presenting postural abnormalities lose much of the shock absorption properties normally associated with a healthy foot posture. 

Football players use torsion-resisting footwear that further compound biomechanical-related injuries on the field.

With a healthy medial arch, mild calcaneal inversion at heel strike and full hallux joint range of motion, athletes perform with greater speed and agility coupled with comfort and reduced injury.

Any incorrect movement patterns affects the body’s entire kinetic chain and can create problems in the knee, hip and lower back in the long run.

Overpronation places the foot at a disadvantage by causing improper weight distribution to the metatarsal phalangeal joints, limiting hallux joint range of motion and creating lower limb valgus stance. 

This is a biomechanical trauma that impacts an athlete’s ability to reach peak performance and places them at greater risk for injury.

There are multiple quality gait assessment tools on the market right now, which are a good addition to any complete physical examination. 

The gait analysis will identify the effects of any noted abnormal foot posture, which can be used as a diagnostic tool as well as for patient education. This one extra analysis will improve the patient’s gait strength, speed, balance and agility.
